What are some quick easy meal ideas for when we are on vacation?

May 19th, 2009 | Category: quick meal ideas

I’m looking for some quick and easy meal ideas that don’t contain a lot of ingredients. My husband, our 6 year old and myself are going to Orlando for 2 weeks in December. We will be spending most days at Disney or enjoying other attractions. We plan to eat out some but in order to stay within budget we will often be making meals at our rented house.

bbq chicken drums (chicken w/a handle as my son calls them)

Pasta w/ sauce

Basic salad w/ beans and tomato’s

5 Quick and Healthy Breakfast Tips

May 19th, 2009 | Category: quick meal ideas

I’m wonder if you understand just how important it is to eat breakfast every morning. You should never start your day without eating breakfast. If you go the whole morning without eating, then when it comes time to eat lunch your more likely to over eat to compensate for the extra hunger. Because your metabolism hasn’t been given a kick start by not eating breakfast, this means that you’re also more likely to not burn those calories. Which also means that they’ll end up being turned to fat and stored somewhere on your body where you don’t want them.

Thus, you want to make sure and eat breakfast every morning. The following is a list of quick breakfast ideas to help ensure that you don’t skip the most important meal of the day ever again.

Quick and Healthy Breakfast Tip #1 Cereal

It was a great way to start your day when you were a kid and it’s still just as effective now that you’re an adult. However, you’ll want to avoid the cereal that’s high in sugar. A healthy bowl of cereal contains a whole grain cereal, such as Cheerios and a small amount of low fat or non fat skim milk.

Quick and Healthy Breakfast Tip #2 Parfait

No, this doesn’t mean take a trip through a McDonald’s drive thru. It means that you make your own healthy version of it. You can mix some low fat vanilla yogurt with some granola and some frozen berries in a blender. It is the perfect breakfast you can eat while on your way to work.

Quick and Healthy Breakfast Tip #3 Whole Wheat Bagel

This is a simple enough breakfast. You can add a small amount of butter or non fat cream cheese to make it exciting. You don’t need to feel guilt because everything about the bagel is good for you, especially the fiber.

Quick and Healthy Breakfast Tip #4 Smoothie

Some yogurt, juice, fruit, and ice mixed together with maybe a scoop of protein powder is ideal for the busy business professional with very little time in the mornings. Smoothies make a large breakfast that is very low in calories and very filling.

Quick and Healthy Breakfast Tip #5 Hardboiled Eggs

This is a quick and easy breakfast if you make it a point to boil a few of the eggs a day or two in advance so that when you’re looking for a quick breakfast fix you can easily reach into the refrigerator grab too, peel them and eat. For flavor you can add a dash of salt, but be careful not to overdo it.

Not only does eating breakfast allow you to maintain a healthier diet, but it also makes you more productive at work or at school. When you don’t have the inconvenience of a growling stomach, your mind is more focused on the tasks at hand. Never allow yourself to skip breakfast, you’ll find that you’re much healthier and a more productive person if you don’t.

Quick Snack and Meal Ideas: Healthy Eats for Moms on the Run

May 19th, 2009 | Category: quick meal ideas

What mother of young children isn’t in a hurry? Driving around town, preparing lunches, changing diapers, shopping and trying to exercise. Whether you work outside or inside of the home, chances are you’re looking for shortcuts when it comes to meals and snacks. Here are a few ideas to get your efficient juices flowing and lose weight in the process.

Quick Lunch Ideas:

Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with celery sticks

Tuna melt with sliced tomatoes on whole wheat bread

Bowl of tomato soup with a whole grain roll

Ready made salad and chicken breast strips

Whole wheat English muffin melt with tomato and cheese

Chicken salad stuffed in a hollowed-out green pepper

Vegetable quesadillas

Quick Snack Ideas:

Yogurt topped with granola and fruit

Bran muffin with apple slices

Brown rice cake topped with ricotta cheese, cinnamon and thinly sliced apple

Bell peppers and hummus

Light popcorn

Cottage cheese topped with peaches or strawberries

Celery with peanut butter or dressing

When you want to snack, you’ll reach for the food that’s easiest to eat. So wash and prepare your vegetables before you need them. At the next snack attack, you’ll be ready with cut celery sticks, snap peas, baby carrots or bell pepper strips. The same thing goes for fruit. A whole cantaloupe or watermelon remains uneaten, day after day. But once it’s sliced and ready to go, voila, it’s a delicious and easy snack. Slice up an apple and have it as a snack two hours after breakfast. Have a slice every few minutes to keep your desire for munchies at bay until lunchtime.

Yes, eating healthy involves more preparation than reaching for a bag of chips. But the payoff is well worth the effort. Your health will improve, you’ll lose weight, and your kids will have a great example of healthy eating. And remember, great choices don’t have to take an hour to prepare.

Today’s Action Step: What are some healthy snack and meal choices you will make today?

Filo & Peri ‘ANTHEM’ ft. Eric Lumiere (Official Videoclip)

December 23rd, 2008 | Category: quick meal ideas

Filo and Peri are two of the hottest up and coming producer and dj talents in the biz. ‘Anthem’, the new single by Filo & Milo is a wonderful combination of smashing beats and very emotional lyrics and melody.

This is an anthem for the girl that got away
This is an anthem for the world of yesterday
This is an anthem for the rebel of my youth
This is an anthem for the risk of loving you…

Enjoy the video, and this interview by EventVibe with the talented duo.

Eventvibe founder, Tim Ortiz, was able to spend time with Dominic Filopei (Filo) & Bo Pericic (Peri) during a recent tour to promote their latest CD, “Crowd Control.”

Tim: Where are you both from in New York?
Filo: I was born and raised in the Bronx.
Peri: I’m from Westchester, NY and our studio is in the Bronx.

Tim: How long have you been in the business?
Filo: I’ve been involved with music since I was 5 years old, but I’ve really only been in the business about four years.
Peri: We’ve been in the business for almost 4 years now, but I have been working on music for as long as I can remember.

Tim: How did you get in the business?
Filo: We officially got in the business when Armin Van Buuren signed our first record in 2003.
Peri: Yeah - we got the call on July 17th, 2003 and Armin wanted to sign our record ‘Elevation’! It’s an easy date to remember because it happened to be on my 18th birthday - what a great present!

Tim: Bo, has your age ever gotten in the way of your goals as a producer/dj?
Filo: Not really. It’s a little harder to have people take you seriously when you’re young, but I don’t mind earning respect. I would say that being a producer/dj has made me grow up quicker because of all the things we’ve had to deal with in this business.

Tim: Dom, a couple of your tracks have been picked up by Paul Van Dyk’s label, Vandit. Tell us about this please.
Peri: We’ve been very fortunate to continuously have our work recognized by the top names in the scene. Last year Paul Van Dyk picked up a tune we made with California based rock band Fisher called ‘Ordinary Moment’. The record was really successful for Vandit and they asked us for more. Our latest production ‘Anthem’ is a collaboration with New York based rock singer and good friend Eric Lumiere. It’s catching a lot of buzz and people are already singing it at all our shows - we’re really excited about that! Just last week at the Winter Music conference Paul van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, and Ferry Corsten all dropped it.

Tim: When you are doing studio work, please explain the creative process and who tends to get involved more, in what areas.
Filo: We are involved in all the areas equally. The case with many duos is that one acts mainly as the producer while the other is more of a DJ. In our case everything is split equally and it really helps us move forward quicker. Sometimes one of us will put in more work on a certain track but at the end, everything we do is 50/50. The creative process is pretty spontaneous and since we have two systems at our studio, we bang out ideas pretty quickly. It’s almost like an assembly line sometimes - while one of us is finishing the new track, the other is coming up with ideas for the next!

Tim: Where does your musical influence and inspiration come from?
Filo: My inspiration comes from the rock legends and their ability to be at the front of the masses and have such a musical and cultural influence. As a DJ, I’m starting do the same thing and I have not had a more gratifying experience than that.
Peri: My dad has always been into electronic music and I grew up listening to electronic music pioneers such as Jean Michelle Jarre, Kraftwerk, etc. That really made an impact on me! I have an extremely close family and my parents are a continuous source of inspiration. The opportunities I’ve been presented throughout my entire life is a direct result of their hard work, and that inspires me to work hard every day. It’s hard not to be inspired when such an amazing family, girlfriend, and music partner/best friend (Domenick) surrounds me.

Tim: What should we expect from Filo and Peri in the next year?
Filo: You can expect Filo and Peri in a city near you!
Peri: An artist album later this year and some exciting gigs! We’re also starting to work with Paul Van Dyk and Vandit much more closely.

Ideas for quick & healthy meals that are good for breastfeeding mommies?

December 15th, 2008 | Category: quick meal ideas

I feel like I have run out of things to cook, because everything I usually make either takes too much time or gives my 3 week old son gas. I need some ideas for meals that are quick & healthy and don’t cause gas in my breastfed baby … any suggestions?

ah, my favorite cookbook is “Cheap, Fast, Good” and my second fav is “Desperation Dinners”. Bonus, they come with shopping lists written out in the back.

These will get decent healthy dinners on the table in under 30 minutes, and they TASTE good.

After six weeks, most gassy issues go away. By two months, it’s always been a nonissue with my kids.
